What are neuromodulators and how do they work?
Neuromodulators are natural purified proteins derived from botulinum bacteria. When injected into muscles that cause wrinkles neuromodulators will relax those muscles for about 3 to 4 months. This results in a smoother more relaxed appearance. Typically these prescription neurotoxins are used to treat frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet but many other areas can also be treated including smoker’s lines, gummy smile, heavy brows and other areas.
How are neuromodulator treatments done?
Using very, very small needles, a small amount of neuromodulator is injected directly into the muscles that are responsible for producing wrinkles. The dosage used varies depending on which muscle is being treated and the strength of that muscle. Men typically require higher doses than women. At the appropriate dose these medications effectively relax these muscles, thereby causing lines to disappear or diminish dramatically.

BOTOX COSMETIC® FAQ’s
-
Botox cosmetic is a natural purified protein that relaxes muscles causing wrinkles, creating a smoother and improved appearance. Botox is highly effective for the treatment of expression lines such as "crow's feet" near the eyes and forehead furrows or frown lines.
-
The muscles of facial expression will typically cause the overlying skin to wrinkle in an accordion-like fashion. These lines are caused when overactive muscles reduce the collagen in the skin, which contributes to the skin's wrinkled appearance. BOTOX® is administered via a few tiny injections of purified protein into the muscles that create wrinkles thereby lessening the appearance of frown lines, laugh lines and crow’s feet. It prevents the muscle from contracting, so the skin crease gradually decreases in depth and severity. Botox® effectively inactivates the muscles that produce wrinkles, thereby causing lines to disappear or diminish dramatically
-
It usually takes a few days, but it can be more than a week for some to notice the wrinkle smoothing effect.
-
Some of the common areas treated include crow’s feet, frown lines, laugh lines, and forehead wrinkles. It is most effective in the areas of the face which rely on a single set of muscles for movement. For example, the area between the eyebrows is very responsive to treatment, but the surrounding muscles may sometimes be ‘recruited’ by the body to create movement in the area, even though the muscles directly below the area are completely relaxed. It is more difficult to achieve complete smoothness of the crow’s feet than the brow area for the same reason.

A Botox® treatment is quick and results usually last 3 to 4 months. After that you may return for a follow-up injection. Some doctors report that after several treatments, the effect of Botox® appears to last longer, often up to 6 months or more.
-
The best candidates for the procedure are those between ages of 25 and 65. Each person is different however, and should undergo a consultation determine the most effective treatment plan months in advance.
-
A very small amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into each or the target areas using a very small needle. Because the needle is fine, only a small amount of the liquid is injected and the associated discomfort is minimal.
-
The injections are very small and done with a tiny needle that usually does not cause discomfort. Most patients compare the sensation to light pinch. No sedation or local anaesthetic is necessary and you can resume normal activities immediately afterwards. The pressure sensation associated with the injection goes away very quickly and patients can return to normal activities immediately after the procedure.
-
As the BOTOX® Cosmetic wears off the wrinkles will begin to reappear but frequently they are not as deep or noticeable. To maintain the smooth, youthful appearance year round, it requires three to four injections per year. With repeat treatments, the effects tend to last longer thus requiring fewer injections.
-
No. Most people return to work or normally activities immediately following treatment. It is recommended that you avoid exercise, heavy lifting and massaging the injected area injected for one day. No hot tub, saunas, steam rooms on the injection day. Do not lie down for 3 hours.
-
Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.
-
