Pelvic Floor Health
There’s nothing wrong with aging! We’re aging positive at ArtMed. But some aspects of aging can be troublesome and impact daily activities and quality of life.
A common problem many people face is the issue of stress and/or urge incontinence. The urogenital system (bladder, reproductive organs, rectum) are supported by the pelvic floor – a complex system of muscles and ligaments. When we’re young the pelvic floor is strong and does a great job of supporting our pelvic organs. But as we age there are many things that can impact the health and strength of the pelvic floor. Pregnancy, a job that requires heavy lifting, carrying excess body weight, gravity, menopause/andropause – any one or a combination of these things can weaken the pelvic floor.
When the pelvic floor is weak the bladder ‘falls’ backward greatly increasing the likelihood of urine leakage. Coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting – anything that puts even momentary pressure on a bladder which is insufficiently supported by a weak pelvic floor can increase the likelihood of leaks and urinary frequency (having to urinate more often).
When a woman or man has stress or urge incontinence it can really interfere with daily life and negatively impact quality of life.Strengthening the pelvic floor can improve continence and quality of life whether that means less leaks, longer periods between bathroom breaks or sleeping through the night.
ArtMed is very pleased to have a pelvic floor team – a pelvic floor physiotherapist and nurses who work with you to develop a treatment plan to improve your pelvic floor’s performance.
Your treatment plan may include Emsella, a high-tech chair-like device which provides non-invasive treatment to strengthen the pelvic floor musculature.
Treatment can be partially covered by third party physiotherapy insurance when Emsella is provided under the care of a pelvic floor physiotherapist.
