Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy FAQs
-
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on assessing and treating issues related to the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding structures. It aims to improve the function of these structures through various exercises, education, hands on treatments and modalities (like Emsella).
-
Pelvic floor physiotherapy can be helpful for a wide range of issues, including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction, and pregnancy-related concerns.
-
A pelvic floor physiotherapist assesses your pelvic floor muscles and creates a tailored treatment plan. Treatment may include exercises to strengthen or relax these muscles, manual techniques, biofeedback, modalities and education on lifestyle and behavior modifications.
-
During a session, you can expect the therapist to ask questions about your medical history and symptoms. They may perform a physical assessment, which can include internal or external examinations of the pelvic area. Based on the assessment, the therapist will develop a treatment plan and guide you through exercises and techniques.
-
No. All portions of the assessment are always done with your comfort in mind. The physiotherapist will go over the benefits and drawbacks of any internal assessments (vaginal or rectal depending on the area of difficulty),but will make sure you feel comfortable with any assessment before moving forward. Improvements can be made without internal assessments, and they are not a mandatory part of the assessment.
-
Yes, pelvic floor physiotherapy is not limited to women. Individuals of any sex can benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy.
-
You do not need a referral to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist. However, it's advisable to check with your insurance company to determine if a referral is required for reimbursement.
-
